june 2019 newsletter
ALAN STEVENSON R.I.P.
Sadly we start this newsletter on the news that Alan passed away on Friday 31st May losing his short battle with cancer, at 67. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Jenny and the family at this very hard time. Jenny has been a site rep at Cross Lane for several years and Alan, upon retirement joined up with Chris Overton to help look after our collection of machinery over the last eighteen months, helping make savings of around £2000 over previous years’ maintenance budget. We shall all miss his big smile and he was often first at the bar getting in the order, following a gruelling 90 minutes at our committee meetings.
MURIEL BECK R.I.P
Another recent loss has been Muriel Beck, wife of Michael Beck from Topstreet Way. Over the years they have been prolific prize winners sharing many awards for their plots. Our condolences to Michael and the family.
COMMITTEE CHANGES
Another AGM concluded and we have some new names and faces joining the committee. Firstly we welcome our Hon. Sec. Peter Hicks who was co opted onto the Committee last September stepping into Roger Glanville’s shoes on his retirement. There has been a new position formed and we now have a Publicity Officer, Jane Keech. We have also lost the services of two Site Reps, Albert Callewaert (PH) and Mark Sanders (AB). Their hard work has been much appreciated over the previous years. Stepping up to fill the void we now have Geoff Bateman for PH and Tom Chichester-Miles for AB.
ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
Roger Glanville has recently sent out the initial plan for our forthcoming 50th Anniversary event to be held at Piggottshill site on SUNDAY 14th JULY. If you have any further suggestions and any offers of help please contact Roger [email protected]
We now need to find our barbecue chef and from previous years’ events there have been bbqs of epic proportions. We still have the big oil drum set up, as well as a gas bbq and a large charcoal style, but perhaps if anyone is prepared to loan a kettle bbq for the event, then some of our specialist menus can be produced. With our cosmopolitan membership it would be nice to offer a range of worldwide ‘street food’ to sample and enjoy.
