"WHAT TO DO"
DO purchase and use only E5 petrol. This is the old super unleaded and has low ethenol. Furthermore, after purchase, petrol for each site should have a fuel additive added. This will be made available to site reps and prevents the fuel going stale. .
DO familiarise yourselves with the Societies Safe Working Practices Checklist and read the Individual Operating Instructions for each machine before use.
DO before use, search for and clear all stones from grass areas about to be mown.
DO check fuel and oil levels before starting an engine and use clean fuel and funnel to refill.
Mowers are all four stroke and require separate petrol and 15w/40 multigrade oil.
Strimmers are all two stroke and require a mixture of petrol and two stroke oil of the correct ratio using the yellow mixing bottle provided.
DO start the engine by first taking up the slack in the starting cord and then pulling firmly and smoothly. Most starter cords and starting mechanisms are prematurely damaged by ignoring this simple procedure.
DO take care with pulling the starter cord. To reduce the risk of damaging your hands please wear gloves. If a mower or strimmer will not start after several attempts please leave it for a while before trying again. If it still will not start please report it to your site rep and do not attempt any more times to avoid the possibility of injury to yourself.
DO clean machines after use making certain that on mowers you follow the instructions on the cutter deck to only lift from the correct side to prevent engine oil being leaked into the air filter.
DO use a strimmer to cut rough grass such on uncultivated areas. Our mowers are designed to cut on flat even surfaces and the blades are easily damaged on rough ground.
DO make several passes when strimming long grass otherwise the long grass will wrap itself around the cutter head and stall the engine.
DO follow the instruction for your strimmer when replenishing the nylon cord and wind it onto the spool in the correct direction otherwise the cord will not advance.
DO inform your Site Rep, as soon as possible, when supplies of strimmer cord, engine oil and two stoke oil are running low as they have access to further correct specification supplies provided by the Society.
DO report any machinery problems to your Site Rep for attention. If you consider the machine to be unsafe please attach a DO NOT USE label to protect other plotholders.
All equipment is subjected to an annual service and safety check. Safety checks are also carried out after each repair.

USING A FUNNEL AND FILTER Please see photograph
Please use a funnel with a gauze filter at all times when refuelling mowers, rotavators and strimmers. Please see the photograph of one use of a funnel at Cross Lane. This shows strands of grass and small specks of dirt, all of which would have got into the mower’s tank without the filter. Those specks of dirt would have clogged up the carburettor and then required the machines repair. A brand new mower at Piggottshill had to go back for this very problem leading to the loss of its use and a cost to society of over £30.00. There should be funnels with filters in every tool shed, if you cannot find one please inform your site rep or the machinery manager at [email protected]

ALL STRIMMERS SHOULD NOW USE A 40:1 MIXTURE.
Please see photograph
Fuel for the strimmers should be ready mixed in the small yellow bottles. If the yellow bottle is empty pour one litre of petrol carefully up-to the 1000cc line, then pour in the dedicated two stroke oil up-to the 40:1 line. Then shake the bottle to mix the contents, you should also always shake the bottle before use in case the 2 stroke mixture has separated. All petrol used must be E5 petrol.
IMPORTANT: IF YOU ARE NOT SURE HOW TO USE ANY OF THE MACHINERY OR HOW TO REFUEL THEM OR YOU CANNOT FIND A FUNNEL WITH A FILTER PLEASE ASK ADVICE PREFERABLY FROM YOUR SITE REP. OUR MACHINERY REPAIRS ARE A CONSIDERABLE COST TO THE SOCIETY
